Major Gavin Baxter Embarks on Bluff-to-Cape Reinga Walk to Refill Empty Foodbanks

After 31 years of service to The Salvation Army, Major Gavin Baxter is lacing up his boots for one final act of service as an officer, walking from Bluff to Cape Reinga to raise vital funds and awareness for The Salvation Army’s foodbanks.

Launching on 1 January 2026, the Marching for Meals campaign will see Gavin travel more than 2000 km over six months, visiting Salvation Army centres and shining a light on the growing issue of food insecurity across Aotearoa.

“I’ve spent my life serving people in need, and this walk is a way to keep doing that in a different way,” says Gavin. “Our foodbanks are often running on empty after Christmas, and we need your help to refill the shelves and make sure no family goes hungry in 2026.”

Gavin’s journey comes at a significant moment in his life. Recently recovering from surgery and preparing for retirement, he says this challenge is deeply personal:

“I wanted to finish my time as an officer by doing something that really matters. Walking the length of the country is no small task, but hunger is an even bigger challenge for thousands of Kiwi families. If my steps can help put food on someone’s table, then every blister will be worth it.”

The walk will take approximately six months, with Gavin stopping at Salvation Army centres along the way to share stories, encourage communities, and highlight the urgent need for foodbank support.

“Christmas is a time of generosity, but by January our shelves are bare. Families still need help long after the decorations come down. This campaign is about making sure that help is there.”

Every dollar raised will go directly to replenishing The Salvation Army’s foodbanks nationwide, providing meals and dignity to families facing hardship after the holiday season.
