Supportive Housing

The Salvation Army have been involved in Supportive Housing (previously Transitional Housing) for the past 115 years and were one of the first providers of this service within Aotearoa. We continue to be one of the leading Supportive Housing providers working in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Ministry of Social Development (MSD).  

Our Supportive Housing programme provides safe short-term accommodation for whānau in need for up to 12 weeks. While in the service whānau are supported by skilled professionals to address their immediate needs, provide wrap around supports and secure long term accommodation. Examples of wrap around supports can include financial mentoring, creating links with other Salvation Army services, connecting with community-based support organisations and/or local marae. 

Once whānau have been placed into long-term sustainable accommodation, support is continued for a further 12 weeks to ensure the success of the whānau in that accommodation. 

Our supportive housing is suitable for whānau of all sizes, although some of our supportive housing locations have certain criteria for entry, this is noted next to the location names below. We have over 800 spaces across Aotearoa that can receive referrals from the National MSD Housing Register. One referral can house individuals or a whānau of up to 8 people.  

We receive referrals for Supportive Housing through the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), local community groups, other non-government organisations/social services and self-referrals by visiting us at one of our local centres.
